Data Bitcoin’s record, to scale
The layers are Bitcoin’s reward eras, to scale: each gold vein is half the one below it. The base layer began in 2009; the thin top layer is the era still being laid.
Who is responsible
Melanin Engineering (“Melanin”, “we”, “us”) is responsible for the personal information described here. It covers this website, your Melanin account and dashboard, the Bitcoin mining pool, the public explorer, Melanie (our help chat), the Academy and the newsletter.
What we collect
- Your email address, to send sign-in codes and messages about your account.
- Account records: your sign-ins and sessions, your account’s permissions, and security records of account activity.
- Mining set-up: the payout addresses you save, your worker names and their settings.
- Mining records: the work the pool records for your payout address, such as shares, speed estimates and blocks.
- Messages: what you send through Support or to Melanie, and our replies.
- Learning: your Academy progress, if you use it while signed in.
- Newsletter: your email address and your choice to receive it, if you subscribe.
- Technical records: your IP address and browser details in our server and security logs, used to keep the services working and to stop abuse.
- How you found us: if you arrive from a campaign link or another website, its label and the website’s address can be recorded with your account or request.
Never send us a private key, a recovery phrase or a password. We will never ask for one.
How we use it
- To sign you in and run your account, the dashboard and the pool.
- To show your mining records to you.
- To answer Support requests and messages.
- To send the newsletter you asked for and messages about your account.
- To keep the services secure and stop abuse.
- To meet our legal obligations.
- To improve the services, using counts rather than profiles of people.
What is public
Bitcoin is public by design. Pool payouts are written into the Bitcoin blockchain, where anyone can see the address that was paid and the amount. Nobody, including Melanin, can remove them.
The public explorer shows an address only if you choose to publish it in your dashboard, and never shows your email address or your machine names. A wallet address can still identify you, even without your name beside it. You can turn publishing off in your dashboard.
Who we share it with
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We use service providers to run Melanin: a hosting provider, an email delivery provider, and tools our team uses to receive alerts and Support notices. They handle information only to provide those services to us. We may also share information when the law requires it, or to protect people or the services from harm or abuse.
Cookies and browser storage
We set one cookie when you sign in, to keep you signed in. Your browser also stores your theme choice and a few settings, such as which menu groups you opened; while you sign in, the email address you typed is kept in that browser tab until a code is accepted. We count page views with our own counter, which uses no cookie and no visitor identifier and is turned off when your browser sends Do Not Track. We use no advertising cookies.
How long we keep it
We keep information while your account is open and afterwards for as long as we need it for security, accounting, resolving disputes or meeting the law. Records written into the Bitcoin blockchain are permanent.
Your choices and requests
- Every newsletter has a link that stops it in one click.
- You can turn explorer publishing off in your dashboard.
- You can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Send a request through Support with a subject that starts “Privacy:”, for example “Privacy: copy of my information”. If you cannot sign in, write to company@melanin.engineering with the same subject.
We may need to confirm that the information is yours before we act. If we must keep some records, for example for security or accounting, we will tell you which.
Security
We limit who can see personal information and keep records of access to it. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise that information will never be accessed without permission.
Children
Melanin is for adults. It is not meant for anyone under 18.
Using Melanin from another country
Our service providers may handle your information in a country other than yours.
Changes to this policy
We may change this policy. When we do, we post the new version on this page with a new date at the top.
